Cello, Piano, Voice | Grayson

Miss Cathryn Appleby, who comes from a musical family, studied cello at the Interlochen Arts Academy and musical theater at the Boston University Theatre Institute. As a mezzo-soprano, she studied Vocal Performance at the University of Evansville where she received her Bachelor’s of Music in 2008. She has since gone on to perform in a variety of productions, as well as study with several young artist programs including the Crested Butte Music Festival, Peach State Opera’s workshop productions, and as a soloist with the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra. Her method as a vocal instructor incorporates the many aspects of singing, with an emphasis on healthy vocal technique, body alignment, and breath support, as well as character development, diction and articulation. As a piano and cello instructor, body alignment and proper playing technique are emphasized for ease of expression and resonance. Students of piano, cello, and voice are taught basic music theory, ear training, and the art of practicing on their own time outside of lessons. They will be introduced to a wide variety of age and voice appropriate music, including classical art song and musical theatre and are encouraged to express themselves creatively through improvisation and even their own compositions. Miss Johns fosters a positive environment of encouragement and acceptance; a judgement-free zone. Every lesson is a space for self-expression, inquisitiveness, and fun!

“Music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”
- Billy Joel
