Learn to Play the Ukulele

If you love a sound that’s joyful, soothing and just a little bit different, ukulele lessons are for you. To learn how to play the ukulele from some true masters, enroll in ukulele lessons at Gwinnett Music.

Brief History of the Ukulele

The ukulele has an interesting history. The instrument emerged from the Hawaiian Islands in the 1800s, and since then has enjoyed popularity around the world. It entered pop culture in the 1961 blockbuster movie Blue Hawaii, where it was used in Elvis' classics including Can’t Help Falling in Love. Shortly thereafter, it enjoyed a more kitschy reputation when Tiny Tim used it to record Tiptoe Through the Tulips.

More recently, Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole used it to record a marvelous version of Over the Rainbow, and Hawaiian-born megastar Bruno Mars used the instrument in several of his songs, including Just the Way You Are and The Lazy Song.

The Atlantic chronicles the popularity of the ukulele in its story The Rise and Fall (and Rise) of the Ukulele.

Students of the Ukulele

Anyone can learn to play the ukulele. Since it is a bit smaller than a guitar and has fewer strings, it can be an easier instrument for a smaller child to begin learning on. Additionally, the ukulele strings correspond to guitar strings, so you can play the same chords on both instruments (although they will sound different).

Many older teens and college students show an interest in ukulele lessons. It’s a great instrument to have on campus, at school, at parties or anywhere you might want to strum some chords and sing a few tunes. Small, lightweight and portable — it’s the perfect companion!

You’re never too old to learn how to play the ukulele, so ukulele lessons are great for adults as well. It makes such a unique sound — so soft and light — that it’s almost impossible to feel sad when playing it.
